Show Me Tell Me – Questions And Answers

Before you start the practical driving test, you will need to answer two questions on vehicle safety. Firstly, we include all the possible questions that you may get on your driving test. Obviously, the answers are here too. Later, we show a few helpful videos as a demonstration. In brief, the driving examiner will ask you one ‘show me’ question. You will also need to show how you would do this. Furthermore, you will then have to answer one ‘tell me’ question too. Of course, this is where you explain how to carry out the check. Hence, this is why the name show me tell me comes from.

Show Me Questions

Q1. Show me how you would check that the direction indicators are working correctly.
A. Find the hazard warning switch and also operate it. From a safe place, check all indicators are working (you may need to switch ignition on but don’t start engine).

Q2. Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car, (if you need to switch the ignition on, but please don’t start the engine).
A. Firstly, ask the examiner if he would check them for you. Also, you may use someone else that is available and press the brake pedal. You could also make use of reflections in windows or garage doors, etc, (you may need to switch the ignition on but don’t start the engine).

Q3. Show me, or explain how you would check that the power assisted steering (PAS) is working before starting a journey.
A. Because PAS relies on the power from the engine, tell the examiner this. Also, say that you would start the vehicle and move the steering wheel a little to the left and right. It should feel easy and light whilst moving it too. Alternatively, you could test the steering just after moving off, making sure it is not too heavy.

Q4. Show me how you would check the parking brake (handbrake) for excessive wear.
A. At this point, press the foot brake firmly to keep control of the car. Demonstrate by releasing the handbrake and also reapplying. The hand brake should not not come up too high as this would indicate it is the end of the working travel. Release the foot brake and the obviously car should not move.

Q5. Show me how you would check that the horn is working (off road only, remember the legal requirements).
A. In short, locate the horn and press it. Obviously you both will hear it.

Q6. Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
A. In brief, find the control switch for this function and demonstrate.

Q7. Show me how you would switch on the rear fog lights and explain when you would use them, (there is no need to exit the car).
A. Firstly, you may need to turn on the the ignition at this stage. Turn on the headlights and then the fog lights and show the warning light that illuminates. Also, explain that you would use the fog lights when visibility was poor and you than can see less than 100 metres.

Q8. Show me how you switch your headlight from dipped to main beam and explain how you would know the main beam is on.
A. If you need to switch on the ignition, do so. Turn on the dipped headlights, then the main beam and show the warning light.

Q9. Show me how you would set the demister controls to clear the windows efficiently.
A. Firstly, turn on the fan and operate it. Of course, explain the temperature air direction for the front window. Also, find the heater rear window switch and turn it on. However, turn it off quickly and it uses a lot of power.

Q10. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
A. Locate the dipstick of course, and point it out. In brief, explain that you remove the dipstick, wipe it clean and put it back. Also, you would remove the dipstick again and check that the oil level is between the maximum and minimum marks.

Q11. Open the bonnet, identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
A. Obviously, show where the coolant tank is. Then, of course, tell the examiner you would check that the level is between the maximum and minimum marks. Never top up the coolant when the engine is hot but explain how you would do this.

Q12. Open the bonnet, identify where the brake fluid reservoir is and tell me how you would check that you have a safe level of hydraulic brake fluid.
A. At this point, identify reservoir and describe how the tank has a maximum and minimum mark. Above all, the fluid needs to be between these marks.

Tell Me Questions

Q1. Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
A. In brief, explain that the brakes should not feel spongy and you should test them as you move off. Also, say that the vehicle should not pull to one side.

Q2. Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
A. At this point, identify the reservoir. Then of course, explain how to check level.

Q3. Tell me where you would find the information for the recommended tyre pressures for this car. Also, how would you check the tyre pressures.
A. In short, explain that the manufacturer’s guide shows this. Also, using a reliable pressure gauge is fine. Explain that you check and adjust pressures when the tyres are cold too. Finally, make sure you include the spare tyre and the use of valve caps in the answer.

Q4. Tell me how you make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted so it provides the best protection in the event of a crash.
A. The head restraint should be adjusted so the middle part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears. Also, it should be close to the back of the head as is comfortable but not touching. Of course, on some vehicles, head restraints might not be adjustable.

Q5. Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that their general condition is safe to use on the road.
A. In brief, explain that the tread depth. Obviously, it should be no less that 1.6mm across the central 3/4 of the breadth of the tyre and around the entire outer circumference. Also, point out that there should be no cuts and bulges in the tyre.

Q6. Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working (no need to exit vehicle).
A. At this point, operate the lights switch. Also explain that you may need to turn on the ignition if necessary for that vehicle. Also say you would then walk round vehicle to check. Because this is a ‘tell me’ question, there is no need to physically check the lights – just tell the driving examiner.

Q7. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti lock braking system (ABS).
A. In this case, point out the dashboard. Obviously a warning light will illuminate if there is a fault with the ABS.
